By Genevra Pittman NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who eat a diet high in fiber-rich whole grains are less likely to develop diabetes or heart disease, according to a review of past studies. The analysis was conducted for the American Society for Nutrition. In a position statement, the group said evidence suggests foods with cereal fiber or mixtures of whole grains and bran are "modestly associated" with a reduced disease risk. The strongest evidence for benefit came from cereal fiber, researchers said. ...

Sales reps' presence tied to heart stent use: study

Seaman NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Having sales representatives from medical device companies at hospitals may influence which products doctors use and ultimately drive up costs, according to a new study from Canada. Researchers found that doctors were more likely to use a company's drug-coated heart stent when one of its sales representatives visited their hospital, which resulted in about a $250 higher bill per case. Hot temps likely not tied to heart birth defects

Sanofi to cut 207 R&D jobs in latest French reshuffle

Sanofi management told union representatives on Tuesday that the group planned to cut 376 research jobs in France, offset by the creation of 169 new openings, mostly near Paris. "As far as research and development is concerned, this plan could lead to a net loss of 207 jobs out of 5,000," a Sanofi spokesman said. ...

Kris Kross rapper Kelly died from drug overdose, authorities say

By David Beasley ATLANTA (Reuters) - Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly of the 1990s teen rap duo Kris Kross died in May from a drug overdose according to toxicology reports, authorities said on Tuesday. Mary Beth Hauptle, an investigator with the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office in Atlanta, released the test results to Reuters but declined to identify the drugs used. A friend of Kelly's told police that Kelly, 34, was using a mixture of heroin and cocaine on the evening before he was found unconscious in his Atlanta home on May 1, according to a police report. ...

U.N.'s Ban fears for 2,500 civilians trapped in Syria's Homs

GENEVA (Reuters) - Some 2,500 civilians are trapped in the Syrian town of Homs, the scene of heavy fighting, the spokesman for U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement on Tuesday. Roche buys U.S. blood-testing firm for initial $220 million

ZURICH (Reuters) - - Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG is buying Constitution Medical Investors (CMI), the U.S. developer of a testing system for blood diseases like anemia and leukemia, for an upfront $220 million, plus further contingent payments. Roche, the world's largest maker of cancer drugs, said on Tuesday the contingent payments depended on the achievement of certain milestones, without giving details.
