Thursday, Nov 28, 2013 03:31 PM PST
Pizza Hut Fires Manager for Refusing to Open Thanksgiving Dayfranchise in Indiana is mulling over a rehire offer from the worldwide pizza chain after he was fired for refusing to open the restaurant on Thanksgiving Day. Tony Rohr, 28, said he was told to write a letter of resignation after deciding to give his employees at the Elkhart, Indiana, store the holiday off. He told South Bend, Indiana, station WSBT-TV that he instead wrote a letter explaining why the store, part of Yum Brands Inc, should be closed, and then he was fired. Mexican drug cartels now make money exporting ore
Friday, Nov 29, 2013 08:43 AM PST
In this Aug. 14, 2013 photo, Mexican army soldiers enter the iron ore mine in the town of Aquila, Mexico. A resident of Aquila, said that since 2012, the Knights Templar cartel demanded residents hand over part of the royalty payments from the local iron ore mine operated by Ternium, a Luxembourg-based consortium. Mexican drug cartels long ago moved into oil theft, pirated goods, extortion and kidnapping, but it still came as a shock this month when federal officials revealed the gangs have broadened the scope and sophistication of their economic empires by entering the country's lucrative mining industry, exporting iron ore to Chinese and other foreign mills. US eyes phase-out of old telephone network
Thursday, Nov 28, 2013 06:37 PM PST
America's plain old telephone network is rapidly being overtaken by new technology, putting US regulators in a quandary over how to manage the final stages of transformation. The Federal Communications Commission is working toward drafting rules in January to formalize the IP transition -- switching communications systems to Internet protocol. And while FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler hails the technological advance, he has also spoken of maintaining the "set of values" that was used to ensure America's universal phone service. It is a dead model walking," said Scott Cleland, of the research and consulting firm Precursor LLC, noting that three quarters of the transition is done.

Friday, Nov 29, 2013 02:15 AM PST
Millennials Give Obamacare a Big Boost in PollDespite two solid months of technological disasters, significant delays, low enrollment numbers and millions of cancelled insurance policies, the group most crucial to Obamacare's success hasn't given up on it yet. Millennials, ages 18-34, overwhelmingly believe the president's signature healthcare law will work. That's according to a new CNN poll released Tuesday that shows seven in 10 young Americans are optimistic about Obamacare's future. This is good news for the White House, which is desperately counting on at least 2.7 million of these young people to sign up for health insurance through the exchanges to offset the cost of the law.

Two American B-52 bombers have flown over a disputed area of the East China Sea without informing Beijing, challenging China's claims to an expanded air defense zoneChina on Friday scrambled fighter jets to monitor a dozen US and Japanese military aircraft which entered its new air defence zone, state media said. Beijing's announcement last weekend of the air defence identification zone, which covers islands at the centre of a dispute between China and Japan, has raised tensions in the region. The report indicated that Japan and the US are continuing to disregard Beijing's demands that aircraft submit flight plans when traversing the zone in the East China Sea or face unspecified "defensive emergency measures".

No sign of comet after pass around sun: scientists
Thursday, Nov 28, 2013 12:34 PM PST
NASA handout image shows the Comet ISONA comet's 5.5-million-year journey to the inner solar system apparently ended during a suicidal trip around the sun, leaving no trace of its once-bright tail or even remnants of rock and dust, scientists said on Thursday. The comet, known as ISON, was discovered last year when it was still far beyond Jupiter, raising the prospect of a spectacular naked-eye object by the time it graced Earth's skies in December. Comet ISON passed just 730,000 miles (1.2 million km) from the surface of the sun at 1:37 p.m. EST/1837 GMT on Thursday. Astronomers used a fleet of solar telescopes to look for the comet after its slingshot around the sun, but to no avail.
