Chinese technology companies shine in US debut Friday, Nov 22, 2013 11:33 AM PST Investor appetite for Chinese companies seems to have recovered after a series of accounting scandals in the past couple of years dried up U.S. listings of China-based companies in 2011 from a high of 40 in 2010. "If they (Chinese IPOs) are brought by top-tier underwriters, then investors are a lot more interested," said Francis Gaskins, a partner at IPO research company IPODesktop.com. Deutsche Bank led the initial public offering of online sports-lottery operator 500.com, while Credit Suisse and JP Morgan were the lead underwriters for the IPO of mobile applications maker Sungy Mobile. Seven Chinese companies have listed in the United States this year so far compared with just two in 2012. Full Story | Top |

U.S. government rarely uses best cybersecurity steps: advisers Friday, Nov 22, 2013 10:43 AM PST By Alina Selyukh WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government itself seldom follows the best cybersecurity practices and must drop its old operating systems and unsecured browsers as it tries to push the private sector to tighten its practices, technology advisers told President Barack Obama. "The federal government rarely follows accepted best practices," the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology said in a report released on Friday. William Press, computer science professor at the University of Texas at Austin, and Craig Mundie, senior adviser to the CEO at Microsoft Corp, comprised the cybersecurity working group. The Obama administration this year stepped up its push for critical industries to bolster their cyber defenses, and Obama in February issued an executive order aimed at countering the lack of progress on cybersecurity legislation in Congress. Insight: For Cisco and Huawei, a bruising rivalry reaches stalemate Friday, Nov 22, 2013 09:29 AM PST By Jeremy Wagstaff, Sinead Carew and Jim Finkle (Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc and Huawei Technologies Co, two of the world's largest communications equipment makers, have been slugging it out for a decade now - in court, in emerging markets, in the lobbies of government and even on blogs. Earlier this month Cisco CEO John Chambers admitted in an earnings call that political dynamics were stymieing his company's long march into Huawei's backyard. Asked whether the recent U.S. spying scandal was affecting overseas business, Chambers said it was having an impact, particularly in China, which is Cisco's biggest emerging market country but represents less than 5 percent of its total revenue. Huawei has also admitted something of a defeat in the United State for carrier equipment, which accounts for more than 70 percent of its global revenues. Full Story | Top |
Intel shares drop as Wall Street questions mobile growth Friday, Nov 22, 2013 08:36 AM PST Shares of Intel Corp fell nearly 5 percent on Friday after Wall Street came away from its investor meeting craving more evidence that the chipmaker can forge a strong mobile presence to drive up revenue and margins. Executives on Thursday acknowledged that they had underestimated the impact of the mobile revolution, and Chief Executive Officer Brian Krzanich outlined plans to begin manufacturing semiconductors for other companies and develop microchips for cheaper tablets. But some analysts warn the latter was a margin-eroding move, arguing Intel still had no technology to dominate next-generation smartphones that run on 4G LTE standards. "It is about bringing something different to the table in mobility that can sustain their gross margin structure. Full Story | Top |
Germany's SAP may speed up shift to the cloud Friday, Nov 22, 2013 05:55 AM PST By Paul Sandle BARCELONA (Reuters) - German business software group SAP may speed up a shift towards providing its products over the internet in order to tap demand for so-called cloud services and take advantage of Germany's reputation for data privacy, it said on Friday. SAP and rivals such as IBM and Oracle are dashing to meet surging demand for cloud computing, which allows clients to reduce costs by ditching bulky local servers for network-based software and storage in remote data centers. With the cloud services market forecast to grow 18.5 percent this year to $131 billion worldwide, according to research firm Gartner, competition is fierce and software firms face a challenge to adapt. "We have a situation now where we see the move to the cloud, particularly in certain markets like North America, happening even faster, and this is a great opportunity for us to revisit whether we should accelerate the move to the cloud," SAP co-chief executive Jim Hagemann-Snabe said at a Morgan Stanley investor conference on Friday. Chinese Nokia workers pledge to continue strike Friday, Nov 22, 2013 04:38 AM PST By James Pomfret GUANGZHOU, China (Reuters) - Striking workers at a Nokia factory in southern China on Friday threatened to extend industrial action after the company terminated the contracts of 59 employees for failing to return to work. Hundreds of employees stopped work on Tuesday, complaining of changes in the wake of Nokia's sale of its mobile phones business to U.S. software giant Microsoft. The striking workers said they are being forced to sign new contracts with worse terms of employment. On Friday, a photograph posted on Twitter by China Labour Bulletin, a Hong Kong-based labour watchdog, showed hundreds of protestors outside the factory, holding banners that said: "If you want to change the marriage, you have to first offer compensation." More than a dozen police cars were parked outside and riot police stood guard with dogs, said one worker, who declined to be named. Full Story | Top |

U.S. jury awards Apple $290 million in retrial against Samsung Thursday, Nov 21, 2013 03:29 PM PST By Gerry Shih SAN JOSE, California (Reuters) - A U.S. jury awarded Apple Inc about $290 million in a damages retrial against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, restoring a large chunk of a historic verdict the iPhone maker won last year. Apple had requested $379.8 million, while Samsung argued that it should have to pay $52.7 million. Apple and Samsung have been fighting in the courts for over two years. Apple was awarded over $1 billion last year after it convinced a jury that Samsung copied various iPhone features - like using fingers to pinch and zoom on the screen - along with design touches like the phone's flat, black glass screen. Intel CEO says contract manufacturing business to expand Thursday, Nov 21, 2013 03:28 PM PST By Noel Randewich SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said on Thursday he would expand his company's small contract manufacturing business, paving the way for more chipmakers to tap into the world's most advanced process technology. With Intel far behind rivals in making chips for smartphones and tablets, many on Wall Street have urged the company to expand its contract manufacturing business, which currently contributes little to its overall revenue, and to open its factories to high-volume clients making mobile processors. At his first annual investor day since taking over as chief executive in May, Krzanich said the slumping personal computer industry, Intel's core market, was showing signs of bottoming out. Intel's revenues next year will be flat, with lower PC sales offsetting more server sales, he said. Full Story | Top |
