Man arrested over fire that killed his family

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Prosecutors in Poland said Friday they have arrested a man on suspicion he set a fire at his house that killed his wife and four of the couple's five children. They suspect he wanted the insurance money.

California state senator arrested in FBI sweep

(This March 26 story was corrected to fix typo in Yee's name in last paragraph) By Dan Levine and Sharon Bernstein SAN FRANCISCO/SACRAMENTO (Reuters) - A prominent California lawmaker was arrested on Wednesday in an FBI sweep that netted 26 people, a high-profile case that could affect statewide elections and brings to three the number of Democratic state senators who face criminal charges this year. Senator Leland Yee, a former San Francisco supervisor and one-time mayoral candidate, was criminally charged in federal court in San Francisco with two felony counts of conspiring to import and traffic in firearms, and six corruption counts. A criminal complaint posted online by the U.S. Attorney office for the Northern District of California alleges that Yee did favors for an undercover FBI agent in exchange for campaign contributions. The complaint alleges that Yee also offered to facilitate a meeting between the undercover agent and an arms dealer, and discussed the types of weapons that the undercover agent might need.

Qatari sentenced to death for murder of British woman

A Qatari court sentenced a local man to death for the murder of a British school teacher and gave another Qatari man a three-year jail term for helping the killer, in verdicts handed down on Thursday. British media said in October that Lauren Patterson, a 24-year-old primary teacher at a British school in the Gulf Arab state, went missing after being seen with two men at a nightclub in the capital, Doha. In a statement issued by the Foreign Office, Patterson's mother said justice had been served on Badr Hashim Khamis Abdullah al-Jaber, who was sentenced to death. But Alison Patterson said the accomplice, Muhammad Abdullah Hassan Abdul Aziz, had not faced adequate justice.
