| Northwestern says its views on football players union 'overlooked' Friday, Mar 28, 2014 12:35 PM PDT (Reuters) - Northwestern University said April 9 is the deadline for it to file an appeal opposing a U.S. National Labor Relations Board decision that declared Northwestern football players to be school employees and allowed them to hold a union election vote. "Northwestern believes the decision overlooked or completely ignored much of the critical testimony supporting the university's position that student-athletes are not employees of Northwestern," said school spokesman Alan Cubbage in a statement on Friday. | Cricket-India reach semis after thumping Bangladesh Friday, Mar 28, 2014 11:01 AM PDT (Adds details, quotes) By Amlan Chakraborty MIRPUR, Bangladesh, March 28 (Reuters) - Former champions India became the first team to qualify for the World Twenty20 semi-finals after half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma secured a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over hosts Bangladesh on Friday. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra (3-26) was again among the wickets as India restricted the hosts to a below-par 138 for seven and chased down target with nine balls to spare to secure their third win in three matches in the tournament. "We've performed well in this tournament but there are still a couple of areas we can improve in," India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni told reporters. "We fielded well but we've seen quite a few catches going down in the tournament and it has been a problem with all teams." It was a familiar story for the Indians as Dhoni won the toss again and inserted Bangladesh before unleashing his bowlers who restricted their rivals to a sub-140 score for the third match in the tournament. | Soccer-Winning trumps style for pragmatic Brazilians Friday, Mar 28, 2014 10:14 AM PDT By Keith Weir HATFIELD, England, March 28 (Reuters) - Winning the World Cup for a sixth time matters more to Brazil than putting on a display of the "beautiful game", Brazil technical director Carlos Alberto Parreira said on Friday. Parreira, who coached Brazil to the World Cup in 1994, said Brazilians loved what he called "fancy football" and dribbling but it was not always possible to turn on the style. "In the end, what really counts is to win the World Cup. Parreira's Brazil team ultimately had to grind their way to victory in that 1994 tournament, winning the final on penalties after a 0-0 draw with Italy. Full Story | Top |

| Soccer-Title-chasing Liverpool under 'no pressure', says Rodgers Friday, Mar 28, 2014 09:34 AM PDT Brendan Rodgers rejected Tim Sherwood's claims that Liverpool may struggle with the pressure of being in the title race when Tottenham Hotspur visit Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday. Second-placed Liverpool, who have 68 points from 31 games, have been the surprise packages in the Premier League this season and are a point behind leaders Chelsea. But Sherwood said Liverpool looked agitated in their victory over Sunderland on Wednesday and has questioned whether they can "hold their nerve" in the title race. "There was no expectation on us being where we are so there's certainly no pressure on ourselves," Rodgers told a news conference on Friday. Full Story | Top |
| U.S. college, athletes wanting to unionize face long battle Friday, Mar 28, 2014 09:30 AM PDT Northwestern University football players who tentatively won the right to unionize are digging in for a lengthy legal and political battle with the Illinois school that could reshape the multimillion-dollar sports business U.S. colleges have built around unpaid amateur players. As politicians and college sports officials warn that the athletes' push to be paid as university employees - rather than be compensated through scholarships alone - could lead to calamity at many schools, the issue has begun to shift to Washington. That is where the five-member National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) will consider Northwestern's bid to reverse a regional NLRB director's ruling on Wednesday in favor of the players. The regional director, Peter Sung Ohr, rejected Northwestern's contention that its football players are amateur athletes, and granted the players the right to unionize as school employees.
