Tribeca Festival films go behind the scenes in fashion, dance and theater Thursday, Apr 17, 2014 12:26 PM PDT By Patricia Reaney NEW YORK (Reuters) - From final fittings at a famous Parisian fashion house to rehearsals for a young choreographer's new work for the New York City Ballet and a global tour of "Richard III," documentaries at the Tribeca Film Festival give viewers the film equivalent of a backstage pass. "Dior and I," which opens on Thursday, follows creative director Raf Simons, 46, as he prepares his first couture collection for Christian Dior, and uncovers similarities between the Belgian designer and the French founder of the famous Parisian fashion house. "There were all these uncanny things," said New York-based, French-born director Frederic Tcheng about the two men, both shy, reserved and inspired by the arts. Using voiceover excerpts from Dior's 1956 memoir "Christian Dior & I," Tcheng introduces viewers to Dior, both the man and the fashion house he created. Full Story | Top |
'X-Men' director Bryan Singer accused of drugging, raping teen Thursday, Apr 17, 2014 11:14 AM PDT By Eric Kelsey LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A director of the popular "X-Men" films, Bryan Singer, has been accused of drugging and raping a teenage boy in California and Hawaii in the late 1990s, according to a lawsuit filed in U.S. court. The lawsuit filed on Wednesday, just weeks before the release of Singer's upcoming "X-Men: Days of Future Past," alleges the 48-year-old used his influence as a Hollywood insider as well as a range of drugs and alcohol to force anal and oral sex on the boy. Michael Egan seeks unspecified damages and a jury trial after wide-ranging abuses at California and Hawaii house parties beginning in the late 1990s, according to the civil action filed in Hawaii federal court. Salsa music great José 'Cheo' Feliciano, 78, dies in car crash Thursday, Apr 17, 2014 10:28 AM PDT By Ana Martinez-Santiago SAN JUAN (Reuters) - Puerto Rican singer José Luis "Cheo" Feliciano, who performed with some of salsa's top stars, was killed in a car crash in San Juan early Thursday morning, police said. Puerto Rico Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla declared three days of mourning for the widely admired salsero. Manuscript of Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 set for London sale Thursday, Apr 17, 2014 08:32 AM PDT By Michael Roddy LONDON (Reuters) - An autograph manuscript score of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 that had been presumed lost for half a century will be sold at auction in May, Sotheby's said on Thursday. The pre-sale estimate for the manuscript of one of the most important compositions in the Russian romantic repertoire is between 1 million and 1.5 million pounds ($1.68-2.52 million), the auction house said in a press release. The manuscript of the symphony, which had its premiere in 1908 in St Petersburg with the composer conducting, had been on loan to the British Museum for the past 10 years from the Tabor Foundation, which is also a sponsor of the Leeds International Piano Competition. Sotheby's, in an emailed statement, would not comment on whether the manuscript was being placed for auction by the foundation, saying only it was being sold by "an anonymous consignor". Barnes & Noble chairman cuts stake in company again Thursday, Apr 17, 2014 07:05 AM PDT (Reuters) - Barnes & Noble Inc Chairman Leonard Riggio, the bookseller's founder and largest shareholder, cut his stake in the company to 20 percent by selling shares worth about $64 million. Barnes & Noble's shares fell as much as 10 percent to $16.80 in early trading on Thursday. Riggio sold 2 million shares in December, reducing his stake in the troubled company to 26.3 percent from nearly 30 percent. The average estimate of analysts was 1.62 billion and organic growth of 3 percent, according to company-provided figures. "Frozen," led by its Oscar-winning hit song "Let It Go," sold 133,000 copies in its 20th week on the chart, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan. This is the 10th non-consecutive week at the top of the chart for the "Frozen" soundtrack, which has seen rare sales growth months after its release in November 2013. Disney's "The Lion King" soundtrack topped the Billboard chart for 10 weeks in 1994, and "Frozen" is only one of 11 albums that have spent that duration at No. 1 since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales for the chart in 1991. Grammy-winning Jay Z launched the "Made in America" festival in 2012 in Philadelphia with Anheuser-Busch's Budweiser beer brand and concert company Live Nation Entertainment in an effort to bring together diverse musical acts such as hip hop, pop, rock, country and others. "Putting together a music festival that blurred those lines of genres and all walks of life and all people can come, and it's in this city, it's not some far-off place that you can't get to," the 44-year-old rapper said. Garcetti touted the positive economic impact the inaugural festival, which featured performances by Pearl Jam, Drake, Rita Ora and Jay Z himself, had on Philadelphia, bringing in more than $10 million for the local economy and helping the hotel occupancy rate increase to more than 90 percent.
