A nightmare eight days for Barcelona was compounded on Thursday when forward Neymar and defender Jordi Alba were ruled out for up to a month with foot and thigh muscle injuries respectively. Brazil international Neymar has a bruise on his left foot which has caused a build-up of fluid while Spain left back Alba has a strain in his right thigh, Barca said on their website (www.fcbarcelona.es). Vietnam backs out as host of 2019 Asian Games
Thursday, Apr 17, 2014 11:28 AM PDT
Vietnam quit as host of the 2019 Asian Games on Thursday, citing a lack of preparedness and concerns that holding the multi-sport event would not prove financially viable. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said Vietnam was suffering from the effects of global recession and the state was unable to foot the bill for facilities and venues that would not be profitable in the years after the Games. It was not immediately clear which country would take over from Hanoi as hosts of the 18th Asian Games. "We've only heard about it and we are waiting for a formal communication from the Vietnam Olympic Committee," Randhir Singh, secretary general of the Kuwait-based Olympic Council of Asia, told Reuters.

South African Olympic and Paralympic athlete Pistorius sits in the dock during his murder trial in the North Gauteng High Court in PretoriaBy Siyabonga Sishi PRETORIA (Reuters) - The murder trial of Olympic and Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius was adjourned on Thursday until May 5 after the state wrapped up three days of punishing cross-examination of a forensic expert brought by the defense. Judge Thokozile Masipa granted the state's request for a postponement to avoid conflicts with other cases. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel - nicknamed "The Pitbull" for his aggressive style - tore into defense witness Roger Dixon, questioning his credibility and expertise. Pistorius, 27, is on trial for the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, whom he shot dead with four rounds from a 9mm pistol on Valentine's Day last year in his plush Pretoria house.

Nadal battles wardrobe malfunction in Monte Carlo
Thursday, Apr 17, 2014 07:37 AM PDT
(Reuters) - Rafa Nadal is battling a wardrobe malfunction that has forced him to alter his serving routine at this week's Monte Carlo Masters. When he has failed with his first serve, Nadal has had to ask for another ball rather than plucking one from his shorts, because he has been experiencing problems with his pockets. "The ball comes out of the bottom of them and gets in the way," the Spaniard told Teledeporte on Thursday after dispatching Italy's Andreas Seppi to reach the quarter-finals. The Spaniard is sponsored by U.S. apparel maker Nike.
