NBA-Pacers' Granger out 'indefinitely' with sore knee

Oct 30 (Reuters) - The Indiana Pacers will launch their regular season on Wednesday without their top scorer, former All-Star forward Danny Granger, who has been sidelined "indefinitely" because of a sore left knee. Granger, who averaged a team-high 18.7 points per game last season, was consulting with doctors on Tuesday to get a second opinion, the National Basketball Association team said. The 29-year-old injured a tendon in his left knee during the 2011-12 Eastern Conference semi-finals against the Miami Heat and then aggravated the injury during his off-season workouts. ...

Soccer-Sion name sixth coach in two years

ZURICH, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Swiss club Sion have fired Michel Decastel after only two months in charge because volatile president Christian Constantin felt there was disharmony between the coach and his team. Soccer-Sermanni to take charge of U.S. Olympic women's champions

Oct 30 (Reuters) - Former Australia women's soccer team coach Tom Sermanni was named on Tuesday to take charge of the top-ranked United States from Jan. 1 next year. The 58-year-old Scot replaces Pia Sundhage, who quit after the U.S. women's team won their third successive Olympic gold medal at Wembley in August to return to her native Sweden. Sermanni was twice Australia's coach and steered them to the World Cup finals three times, reaching the quarter-finals in 2007 and 2011. ...

Basketball-Blatt quits as Russia coach

MOSCOW, Oct 30 (Reuters) - David Blatt, an American-born Israeli, has quit as coach of the Russian men's basketball team after guiding them to the Olympic bronze medal in London, the country's basketball federation (RBF) said on Tuesday. Blatt, 53, who holds dual U.S. and Israeli citizenship, has coached Russia for the past seven years, leading the team to the 2007 European title - the country's first major championship since 1985. He also helped them to the Eurobasket bronze medal last year. "I am leaving Russia with mixed feelings," he was quoted as saying by the RBF website (www.basket.ru). ...

Soccer-Swedish court sentences 15 following riot

STOCKHOLM, Oct 30 (Reuters) - A Swedish court has sentenced 15 soccer hooligans for up to four months in prison for their part in a violent riot before a match in Gothenburg in August, 2011. The riot took place before a league game between IFK Gothenburg and their bitter Stockholm rivals AIK, which IFK won 3-1. More clashes occurred after the game and all those sentenced were fans of the Gothenburg club. "The district court has considered the charges against 15 people and finds all of them guilty of participating in the violent riot," said a statement released by the court on Tuesday. ...
