NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York City Marathon, one of the premier distance running events in the country, should go ahead as planned on Sunday, but race organizers are awaiting final go-ahead authorization from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the head of the race's organizing group said. Mary Wittenburg, president and chief executive of the New York Road Runners, said on Wednesday the decision whether to hold the race was "entirely" in the mayor's hands. The race draws tens of thousands of participants, including some of the world's elite distance athletes. ...

Soccer-Bin Hammam loses appeal against latest ban - FIFA

ZURICH, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Former FIFA presidential candidate Mohamed Bin Hammam has lost his appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against his latest ban from football, soccer's governing body said on Wednesday. Bin Hammam had a lifetime ban for bribery overturned by CAS in July but was suspended again one week later by FIFA, this time for a provisional period of 90 days, after a fresh probe by its ethics committee was announced. Bin Hammam had appealed in mid-October against that ban, which was extended for another 45 days last week. ...

Soccer-Berg named Blackburn boss

LONDON, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Former Blackburn Rovers defender Henning Berg, who won the Premier League title with the club in 1995, has been named as the new coach of the English second-tier side. The Indian-owned club, who were relegated from the top flight last term and have been without a manager since Steve Kean resigned last month amid fan pressure, did not disclose terms of the deal in a statement issued on Wednesday. LONDON, Oct 31 (Reuters) - The British government is investigating the full details of criminal charges laid by Serbian police against two England Under-21 soccer players after this month's Euro 2013 playoff ended in a mass brawl. The charges have been laid against 12 people, including the two unnamed England players and an assistant coach, who are accused of violent conduct. Five Serbian players have been charged.
