The ruling by the nine justices, the first of its kind for the top U.S. court, buttressed important patent protections relied upon by biotechnology companies while making it clear that genes extracted from the human body cannot be patented. ...

The 95,000 barrels per day Pegasus line has been shut since spilling the oil in Mayflower, Arkansas, where cleanup operations continue. U.S. oil pipelines rarely spill in towns. Dow extends gains, rises 1 percent

Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock ExchangeNEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks extended gains on Thursday, with the Dow Jones industrial average up 1 percent, after stronger-than-expected economic data helped ease concerns about the impending start of the winding down of stimulus from the Federal Reserve. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 156.88 points, or 1.05 percent, at 15,152.11. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 20.25 points, or 1.26 percent, at 1,632.77. The blast created a huge fireball and column of smoke when it hit at 8:37 a.m. (0937 ET) at the plant along the Mississippi River just south of Baton Rouge and about 60 miles up river from New Orleans. About 600 people were working at the plant at the time, and the fire was still burning more than three hours later, state police said. ...

Kinder Morgan shuts Trans Mountain oil line after small spill

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP has shut its 307,000-barrel-per-day Trans Mountain crude oil pipeline after a spill of about 12 barrels of oil was detected near Kingsvale, British Columbia, the company said on Thursday. Repairs were underway the line, which runs west across the Canadian Rockies from Edmonton, Alberta, to the Vancouver area and Puget Sound, but the company did not have details on when flows will resume. Kinder Morgan spokesman Andrew Galarnyk said the company will need approval from Canada's National Energy Board before the line can restart. ...

(Reuters) - The explosion and fire at a Louisiana chemical plant on Thursday injured 33 people, said Jean Kelly, a spokeswoman for the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality. Thirty were taken from the Williams Olefins chemical plant in Geismar, Louisiana, by ambulance and three by helicopter, Kelly said. Marathon Oil CEO to retire December 31, be replaced by Exxon executive
