Italian authorities have not received a formal request for extradition, but have received indications that such a request is on the way, the sources said.

Niger says fugitive wanted by FBI arrested in northern Mali

A Malian man wanted by the United States for killing a U.S. diplomat in Niger in 2000 and convicted for a deadly attack on Saudi tourists there in 2009, has been arrested by French forces in northern Mali, Niger said on Thursday. Alhassane Ould Mohamed, 42, also known as "Cheibani", was among 22 prisoners, several of them Islamist militants, who escaped from a prison in Niger's capital in June. "I can confirm the arrest on Tuesday of Alhassane Ould Mohamed. He was arrested by French security forces," Marou Amadou, Niger's justice minister and government spokesman, told a news conference in Niamey.

Soccer-Austrian player arrested in match-fixing case

Austrian footballer Dominique Taboga, released by his club two weeks ago over match-fixing allegations, has been arrested, state prosecutors said. The 31-year-old defender was arrested on Wednesday in the town of Kaernten, Marcus Neher, spokesman for the Salzburg prosecution service, told the Austria Press Agency (APA). Taboga left first-division club SV Groedig by mutual consent on Nov. 14 after the club said he had admitted trying to persuade four team mates to manipulate matches. Three men, including former Austria international forward Sanel Kuljic, are already being held in custody over allegations that they tried to blackmail Taboga in the case.

The judgement comes a day after a court in Egypt's second city of Alexandria sentenced 14 women it said belonged to the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood to 11 years in jail, and another seven minor girls to a juvenile detention centre. Their sentencing is the latest in an ongoing government crackdown against supporters of former president Mohamed Morsi since the army toppled him on July 3.
