Federer finds Masters' touch just in time
Friday, Nov 01, 2013 12:44 PM PDT
By Gregory Blachier PARIS (Reuters) - Roger Federer had not beaten a top 10 player since January until he overcame Juan Martin Del Potro in the Paris Masters quarter-finals on Friday to secure a much-needed confidence boost. Switzerland's former world number one, now ranked sixth, will face second seed Novak Djokovic in the last four in the build-up to next week's ATP World Tour finals in London. "I knew it was a long time since I had been able to do that," Federer told a news conference after his 6-3 4-6 6-3 victory over the fifth-ranked Argentine. "It seems to be interesting and I'm happy that I made that first step today," he added ahead of next week's ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Cricket-Pakistan spinners choke South Africa to level ODI series
Friday, Nov 01, 2013 12:38 PM PDT
Pakistan's wily spinners gave a masterclass in slow bowling to bamboozle South Africa's batting lineup and lead their side to a 66-run victory in the second one-day international in the United Arab Emirates on Friday. Set a modest 210 to win, South Africa were bowled out for 143 in 40.4 overs as Pakistan's slow bowlers took a combined six wickets at a run rate of under three an over to level the five-match series at 1-1. Saeed Ajmal recorded figures of 2-15 in eight overs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium as the Proteas had no answer to his guile on a wicket that was taking turn, but not excessively so. Veteran Shahid Afridi finished with figures of 3-26 and Mohammad Hafeez 1-25 in his 10 overs as they restricted the runs and piled pressure back onto the South African batsmen.

Yankees re-sign captain Jeter to one-year deal
Friday, Nov 01, 2013 11:44 AM PDT
New York Yankees Jeter watches play from the dugout during their American League MLB baseball game against Toronto Blue Jays in Toronto(Reuters) - The New York Yankees have re-signed shortstop Derek Jeter to a one-year $12 million contract that will make the captain the longest-serving player in franchise history, the Major League Baseball team said on Friday. The 13-time All-Star, who has spent his entire 19-year MLB career with the Yankees, is one of just two players, along with Willie Mays, to record at least 3,000 hits, 250 home runs, 300 stolen bases and 1,200 RBI in their careers. Named the 11th captain in team history in 2003, Jeter is the Yankees' all-time leader in hits, games, stolen bases, at-bats and singles. No active player has appeared in more games for his current team than Jeter, who will become the Yankees longest-tenured player with his first game played in the 2014 season, breaking the record he currently shares with Mariano Rivera.

Everton ready to send message against Spurs: Martinez
Friday, Nov 01, 2013 11:40 AM PDT
Everton's manager Martinez instructs during their English Premier League soccer match against Newcastle United in Liverpool(Reuters) - Everton can send out a message that there is more than one team on Merseyside capable of challenging at the top of the Premier League if they beat Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Across Stanley Park, Liverpool's flying start to the season has caught the eye but Everton's, under new manager Roberto Martinez, has been only marginally less impressive. Everton are sixth, two points behind second-placed Liverpool and four off leaders Arsenal, and their one league loss was at Manchester City where they took the lead before losing 3-1. They have coped with the sale of midfielder Marouane Fellaini to Manchester United with ease and in Romelu Lukaku, on loan from Chelsea, they boast one of the most lethal strikers in the top flight.
