Independent Box Office: Pedro Almodovar's 'I'm So Excited' averages $20,000 in debut

By Todd Cunningham LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Writer-director Pedro Almodovar's "I'm So Excited" was the top-grossing independent movie this weekend, taking in $103,000 from just five screens for Sony Pictures Classics. That's a $20,600 per-screen average - better than any movie in the marketplace - for Almodovar's latest, a comedy that takes place mainly on an airplane. That's good, but not as strong as the opening for his last film, "The Skin I Live In," which averaged $37,187 at five theaters. It went on to take in $3 million in North America, and $30 million worldwide. ...

Brad Pitt's 'World War Z' scores $70 million at booming overseas Box Office

It was a big weekend at the box office abroad. Warner Bros.' "Man of Steel" debuted No. 1 in seven new markets and took in $52 million from 62 markets, and raised its worldwide total to $520 million in the process. Disney's "Monsters University" added $44.2 million from 37 territories. And Universal's "Despicable Me 2" debuted in the top spot in five markets and brought in $41.5 million. ...

'The Sopranos' full seasons available via HBO On Demand

By Tony Maglio LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - HBO is making all six seasons of the James Gandolfini mob drama "The Sopranos" available for one month each, in consecutive order, through HBO On Demand. Season 1 landed on the platform Monday, and will be available through the end of July, followed by Season 2 in August, and so on. Additionally, the Emmy-nominated and Gandolfini-executive-produced HBO documentary "Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq" will receive an encore play Thursday at 7 p.m. on HBO. Gandolfini died at age 51 last month after cardiac arrest.

Tribune to buy 19 local TV stations for $2.73 billion

The purchase from New York private equity firm Oak Hill Capital Partners is another step for Tribune, the publisher of the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune, in transforming itself largely to a broadcast company as it seeks to sell off its newspaper division. ...

The new News Corp, which includes publishing assets, such as The Wall Street Journal and HarperCollins, and an education division, gave up its earlier gains on Monday, and its shares fell 2 percent to $14.95. It has a market value of about $9 billion. That compares with British education publisher Pearson, whose market value is $14. ...

Benfica pay TV set to broadcast club's league matches

LISBON (Reuters) - Benfica TV became a pay channel on Monday and will be the sole broadcaster for the club's Portuguese Premier League home matches - a groundbreaking move among Europe's top clubs. On top of a fee paid for a basic cable TV package, fans in Portugal will have to pay some 10 euros ($13) per month to watch the Lisbon club's matches played at the Luz stadium on television. Club President Luis Filipe Vieira hailed the initiative as "historic" and said the deal meant that "Benfica became the first club in the world to fully exploit its TV rights". ...

Cirque du Soleil performer dies during Las Vegas show

Sarah Guillot Guyard, 31, a member of the cast of the "KA" show at the MGM Grand hotel and casino, was pronounced dead shortly before midnight on Saturday, the Clark County Coroner's office said. The cause of death has yet to be determined. Guyard, who performed as "Sassoon" in the show, which involves aerial acrobatics, had been part of the cast of "KA" since 2006, Cirque du Soleil said in a statement. "I am heartbroken. ...
