"This morning, after the site was opened for visitors and tourists, the suspects threw rocks at the police, wounding two of them," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told AFP. The mosque compound in Jerusalem's Old City -- built on the holiest site in Judaism and considered the third holiest in Islam -- has over the past week seen clashes between Muslim protesters and Israeli police. Dozens of Palestinians were wounded Wednesday in clashes with police after Jewish visitors were allowed onto the compound, which is known to Jews as the Temple Mount -- the site where the biblical first and second temples stood.

Researchers use Twitter to predict crime

File picture shows an official Twitter account on a smartphoneHidden in the Twittersphere are nuggets of information that could prove useful to crime fighters -- even before a crime has been committed. Researchers at the University of Virginia demonstrated tweets could predict certain kinds of crimes if the correct analysis is applied. The results are surprising, especially when one considers that people rarely tweet about crimes directly, said lead researcher Matthew Gerber of the university's Predictive Technology Lab. Gerber said even tweets that have no direct link to crimes may contain information about activities often associated with them.

NEW YORK (AP) — A man accused of pulling the beard of a Sikh professor in an attack where young men called the professor "Osama" and a "terrorist" has been arrested and charged with a hate crime, police in New York City said Saturday.

Captain of sunken SKorean ferry, 2 crew arrested

MOKPO, South Korea (AP) — The captain of the ferry that sank off South Korea, leaving more than 300 missing or dead, was arrested Saturday on suspicion of negligence and abandoning people in need. Two crew members also were taken into custody, including a rookie third mate who a prosecutor said was steering in challenging waters unfamiliar to her when the accident occurred.
