Flanagan, who grew up in Marblehead, Massachusetts, closer to Boston than the marathon's starting line in Hopkinton, said she had desperately wanted to win Monday's race to honor the victims of last year's fatal bombing attack at the finish line. USA!," an emotional performance in a city still recovering from last year's fatal bombing attack on the world-renowned race. Keflezighi, who was born in Eritrea but is now a U.S. citizen, pulled ahead of a pack of elite African runners a little more than halfway into the race and held off a late challenge by Kenya's Wilson Chebet. Among the women, Kenya's Rita Jeptoo notched her second consecutive win of the race, smashing a 12-year course record with a blistering official time of two hours, 18 minutes and 57 seconds, reeling in American Shalane Flanagan, who had led the women for the first 20 miles of the 26.2-mile (42.2-km) race, setting a punishing pace. Returning men's and women's champions Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia and Rita Jeptoo of Kenya are among the top-ranked runners expected to compete in the 26.2 mile race. But each faces a rival with a faster personal-best time: Dennis Kimetto of Kenya ran last year's Chicago Marathon in 2:03:45 and Ethiopia's Mare Dibaba turned in a 2:19:52 performance at the 2012 Dubois marathon. | Timberwolves coach Adelman retires after 23 seasons Monday, Apr 21, 2014 10:56 AM PDT  (Reuters) - Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Rick Adelman announced his retirement from coaching in the NBA on Monday after 23 seasons in the league calling the shots for five different teams. Adelman, who ranks eighth in wins on the National Basketball Association all-time list and twice took teams to the NBA Finals, will remain with the Wolves as a consultant. "I think it's time for me to step aside," said Adelman, 67. We're looking forward to that." | Knicks fire coaching staff after 'difficult' season Monday, Apr 21, 2014 10:42 AM PDT  The New York Knicks fired head coach Mike Woodson on Monday as new president Phil Jackson made the first big move to put his stamp on the National Basketball Association team. Jackson, hired last month to turn around the struggling franchise, said in a statement that the entire coaching staff had been relieved of their duties. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for Mike Woodson and his entire staff," said Jackson, who won a record 11 NBA titles as head coach of the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers in the previous two decades. "But the time has come for change throughout the franchise as we start the journey to assess and build this team for next season and beyond." Despite a late surge in which the Knicks won 16 of their last 21 games, New York finished the season with a 37-45 record and missed the playoffs by one game after winning the division title last year and reaching the Eastern Conference semi-finals.
