| AT&T looks to expand high-speed fiber network to 21 cities Monday, Apr 21, 2014 11:17 AM PDT  By Marina Lopes NEW YORK (Reuters) - AT&T Inc said on Monday it expects to expand its ultra-fast fiber network and TV services to up to 21 U.S. cities, including Chicago and Atlanta. AT&T, which is fighting rivals such as Google Inc as well as cable companies with its fiber-based product, is considering providing broadband Internet speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second and its U-verse television service in cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami. Earlier this month, AT&T announced it was in discussions with North Carolina Next Generation Network to bring U-verse with high-speed internet to North Carolina. Full Story | Top |
| Nokia sees Microsoft deal closing this week Monday, Apr 21, 2014 09:49 AM PDT  HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia said on Monday it expects the sale of its handset business to Microsoft to be finalized on April 25, as it had received all the required regulatory approvals. The closure of the 5.4 billion euro ($7.5 billion) deal, which was agreed in September, had been delayed due to pending approvals, but earlier this month the companies won a crucial nod from Chinese regulators. | Apple, Google vie to offer exclusive game apps: WSJ Monday, Apr 21, 2014 02:12 AM PDT  (Reuters) - Apple Inc and Google Inc are wooing game developers to ensure that top game titles arrive first on devices powered by their respective operating system, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Both the companies are trying to lure game developers by offering premium placement to these games on their app stores' home pages and features lists, the daily said. Apple had struck a deal with Electronic Arts Inc last August to promote the game "Plants Vs Zombies 2" prominently in its App Store, and had a similar arrangement with ZeptoLab to promote the sequel to its popular puzzle game "Cut the Rope", which released in December, the Journal reported. Gox agitated for proof that the Tokyo-based firm was still solvent after a hacking attack, CEO Mark Karpeles turned to the comedy science fiction novel "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy". During an online chat, Karpeles moved the equivalent of $170 million in bitcoin at today's market rates - the virtual equivalent of a bank manager flashing a wad of cash in a wallet to establish credit. The gesture - with a sly wink to the "geek" culture Karpeles believed he shared with many of his 50,000 customers at the time, including an interest in coding, Japanese manga comics and science fiction - succeeded. Gox, was a bright child, but a poor student, a lousy communicator and "too conciliatory", allowing others to take advantage of him, his mother Anne said in a telephone interview. Speaking from her home in Switzerland last week, Anne, 57, said Karpeles was a "terrible" student, but was admitted to Mensa, a global society of those with a high IQ, as a teenager. Mt. The company spoke to Google Inc earlier this year about a possible sale, the Journal reported, adding that it wasn't clear whether the talks are continuing. Square, founded in 2009 by Jack Dorsey, co-creator of Twitter Inc, will likely fetch billions of dollars in a sale.
