Men pose with Apple iPhone 4 smartphone in photo illustration in ZenicaBy Dan Levine SAN JOSE, California (Reuters) - An Apple Inc attorney said the iPhone contains more than 200 inventions and the company deserves legal protection against Samsung, as the rivals returned to court on Tuesday for opening statements in their long-running patent battle. Apple and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd have been litigating around the world for nearly three years. Jurors awarded the iPhone maker about $930 million after a 2012 trial in San Jose, California, but Apple failed to persuade U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh to issue a permanent injunction against the sale of Samsung phones. A sales ban would be a far more serious threat to Samsung, which earned $7.7 billion in the quarter that ended in December.

Cricket-Bravo, Badree power West Indies to World T20 semis
Tuesday, Apr 01, 2014 10:47 AM PDT
(Adds details, quotes) By Amlan Chakraborty MIRPUR, Bangladesh, April 1 (Reuters) - Holders West Indies sailed into the World Twenty20 semi-finals after Dwayne Bravo's power-hitting and Samuel Badree's lethal spin bowling fashioned their comprehensive 84-run victory over 2009 champions Pakistan on Tuesday. Darren Sammy's men overcome a wobbly start to post a strong 166 for six before returning to bowl out Pakistan for 82 runs in 17.5 overs and set up a semi-final clash with Sri Lanka on Thursday. Opting to bat first in what was effectively a quarter-final contest, Bravo (46) and Sammy (42 not out) provided the late assault as West Indies plundered 59 runs in the last three overs at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. "We had nothing to lose, we were under pressure," man-of-the-match Bravo told reporters of the stage when West Indies were 81 for five in the 14th over.

Soccer-Ibra among greats without playing in best league-Mourinho
Tuesday, Apr 01, 2014 10:22 AM PDT
By Julien Pretot PARIS, April 1 (Reuters) - Paris St Germain's Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be remembered as one of the game's greatest players despite never gracing the world's best league, according to Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. Mourinho, whose team visit the Ligue 1 champions in their Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday, managed the Sweden striker at Inter Milan where he said they "connected well" during the 2008-09 season. Ibrahimovic's career has included spells at some of the biggest teams in Italy, Spain, France and the Netherlands, but he is unlikely to set foot in the Premier League having said that Paris St Germain would be his last big club in Europe. This will not alter his status as a world class player, Mourinho said on Tuesday.

Congress begins battle over temporary U.S. tax measures
Tuesday, Apr 01, 2014 10:14 AM PDT
Sen. Ron Wyden attends first Senate Finance Committee hearing as chairman in WashingtonAn annual fight in the U.S. Congress over renewing scores of temporary tax breaks - including the corporate research tax credit and individual deductions for teachers' supplies and college tuition costs - got under way on Tuesday. In the Senate, the new chairman of the tax-writing Finance Committee unveiled legislation that would modestly trim the list of about 55 laws known as the "tax extenders" because they expire every year or two and need to be regularly extended. Oregon Democratic Senator Ron Wyden, who recently took over the committee, scheduled a review-and-amendment session for Thursday on the bipartisan bill that he is offering along with Utah's Orrin Hatch, the committee's top Republican member. The extenders list is chock-full of special tax breaks for businesses.
