Desisa bids for repeat in fast Boston field Friday, Apr 18, 2014 12:15 PM PDT By Svea Herbst-Bayliss BOSTON (Reuters) - When Ethiopian Lelisa Desisa returns to the starting line of the Boston Marathon on Monday after winning the fabled footrace last year one of his fiercest challengers may be Kenyan Dennis Kimetto. Both men arrive in Boston with short but enviable records, with this marking only the fourth marathon for each and the first time they will meet in a race. This year's 118th running of the race is sure to be an emotional one with the largest ever field of 36,000 including many racers who were not able to cross the finish line last year when police stopped the race after two bombs exploded, killing three and injuring more than 260. With his win all but forgotten in the face of the attack, Desisa returned to Boston last summer to donate his first place medal to the city. Full Story | Top |

Nadal's claycourt streak ended by bold Ferrer Friday, Apr 18, 2014 11:53 AM PDT (Reuters) - Rafael Nadal's 30-match claycourt winning streak ended on Friday when the world number one was stunned 7-6(1) 6-4 by fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in the Monte Carlo Masters quarter-finals. Sixth seed Ferrer, who had beaten Nadal on clay only once 10 years ago and was brushed aside by the muscular left-hander in the French Open final last year, relied on his devastating forehand to prevail in over two hours. Nadal, who made an uncharacteristic string of unforced errors, was looking to recapture his Monte Carlo crown after Serb Novak Djokovic ended his eight-year reign in last year's final - his last defeat on the slow surface. Former world number one Roger Federer, seeded fourth, got off to a sluggish start but saw off local favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 2-6 7-6(6) 6-1 to set up a meeting with second seed Djokovic who rallied to beat unheralded Spaniard Guillermo Garcia Lopez 4-6 6-3 6-1. Games-Replacement Asian Games host needed fast, not Singapore: Ng Friday, Apr 18, 2014 11:24 AM PDT By Patrick Johnston SINGAPORE (Reuters) - The Olympic Council of Asia must move fast to find a replacement city to host the 2019 Asian Games, International Olympic Committee Vice President Ng Ser Miang told Reuters on Friday, but ruled out his suitable Singapore homeland as an option. Vietnam's government announced their surprise decision on Thursday to quit as hosts of the event in their capital Hanoi, citing a lack of preparedness and concerns that holding the multi-sport event for the first time would not prove financially viable. Wealthy Singapore will host the much smaller SEA Games in 2015 for 11 Southeast Asian countries in their soon to open $1 billion sports hub, which includes a 55,000 seat stadium, and 6,000 capacity aquatics center, but were not seeking any extra work load at short notice. A bid for 2019 Asian Games is not on the cards at the moment." Hanoi was awarded the Games in November 2012 ahead of the Indonesian city of Surabaya but the cost of hosting the event, which economists have estimated could be as high as $500 million, was an issue. Manufacturers limited in efforts to make F1 louder Friday, Apr 18, 2014 11:22 AM PDT By Abhishek Takle SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Formula One engine manufacturers believe there is a limit to what they can do to improve the sound of the new power-units, they said ahead of meetings aimed at exploring ways to make the sport louder. World champion Sebastian Vettel has attacked the new sound and the governing International Automobile Federation is conducting a study into making the engines louder. The first meetings that will kick off the process were scheduled to take place on Friday, engine manufacturers said. Renault Sport F1's deputy managing director Rob White said the complex new hybrid technology introduced this year, which harnesses waste heat and reuses it to power the car, limited what engine manufacturers could do to pump up the volume. Memorial held for policeman slain after Boston Marathon bombing Friday, Apr 18, 2014 10:53 AM PDT By Daniel Lovering CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (Reuters) - More than 1,600 people gathered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Friday for a memorial service for a popular campus police officer shot to death a year ago in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing. MIT police officer Sean Collier, 27, was shot multiple times in his car in an apparent confrontation with the bombing suspects days after the blast, which left three people dead and more than 260 injured when two homemade bombs exploded near the race's finish line. Collier was killed in an unsuccessful attempt to steal his gun, authorities said. Police officers, government officials, students and faculty joined members of Collier's family at the outdoor service under a tent a short distance from where Collier was killed, a place marked by a temporary memorial planted with flowers. New Ferrari boss thought job offer was April Fool Friday, Apr 18, 2014 09:21 AM PDT By Abhishek Takle SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Ferrari's new team principal Marco Mattiacci was taken by surprise when Luca di Montezemolo offered him the top job at Formula One's glamour team, the Italian initially believing the chairman's approach to be a joke. Mattiacci, formerly head of the Italian carmaker's North American operations, was named chief of Ferrari's competition division, including the Formula One team, on Monday after Stefano Domenicali took responsibility for the poor start to the season and resigned as team principal. Mattiacci revealed on Friday ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix how fast things had moved between him being offered the job and accepting it. "I received a call at 5.58 on Friday morning and chairman Montezemolo on the phone told me, 'this is my idea.' "And I told (him) that April Fool's (day) was already far away, 15 days earlier," said Mattiacci, who lives in New York. Full Story | Top |

Nadal admits lack of confidence Friday, Apr 18, 2014 08:20 AM PDT (Reuters) - Despite going into the Monte Carlo Masters on the back of another impressive unbeaten run on clay, Rafael Nadal admitted six weeks before his beloved French Open that he has been struggling with his confidence for months. The world number one, who was knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters on Friday by fellow Spaniard David Ferrer, sustained a back injury at the Australian Open in January. After what happened in Australia it was little bit harder for me to find again the intensity, the confidence, the inside power that I always have," said Nadal after a 7-6(1) 6-4 defeat by Ferrer ended his 30-match winning run on clay. No problem about that." After losing the Australian Open final to Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, Nadal won the Rio de Janeiro tournament on clay before being eliminated in the third round of the Indian Wells Masters and losing in the final of the Miami Masters to Novak Djokovic.
